Contract Clarity and more

Michele Bowman sent out an email to hopefully clarify how to correctly submit conferences so she can grant you the credit In her email she states:
It seems that there are many of you who have been awaiting final approval for the event you attended, however, the final approval requests through MLP did reach my administrative account to approve. I believe the reason for that is because there is confusion regarding the manner in which the request is processed. Therefore, I would like to outline the steps you must take to submit the final approval request and thus avoid any further complications or frustration.

Just a friendly reminder about Professional Development Hours...
PLEASE make sure that you are registering for ANY and ALL conferences that you are attending, whether it falls under a Superintendent's Conference Day or Professional Development Day, using My Learning Plan. This is particularly important for new teachers that fall under the Initial/Professional Teacher Certification guidelines. You WILL NOT gain all of your hours through these days and we want to make sure that no one is at risk of losing certification over this matter.

Sadly we have seen some great teachers laid-off due to student enrollment decline and budget difficulties. We know that the immediate future looks gloomy but brighter days do lie ahead.
NYSUT did have some useful information on their website in April. The attached link may answer some of you questions.

Facebook, Twitter and MySpace beware!
Do you have a personal blog? Do you have a life? Do you post things about what you do outside of the East Greenbush School District Walls? If you do, you should be aware of the concerns of privacy from our students, parents and the community at large. Please be sure you have set the privacy settings on you blog account so that only people that can explore your blog are your invited guests. If you do not know how to do that, consult someone who does. The NYSUT newsletter recently posted an interested article about this.

The District has procedures in place that teachers need to follow in order to seek approval and get reimbursed for conferences and workshops. Please refer to the attached document that the District created that breaks down the steps needed for this process.

At times there is a need for the EGTA to show our spirit. Sometimes we need to demonstrate solidarity and show that we stand together. Many of us have an EGTA shirt or sweatshirt, some do not. Open the link to get to the button download.

Payroll dues deductions will begin on October 17th and end with the April 3rd payroll check. If you wish to pay your full dues by check, please make it out for the total dues, payable to EGTA, and send it to Gretchen Schulz (EGTA Treasurer) at Columbia. Dues checks must be received by Wednesday, October 1st, to prevent automatic payroll deductions.
Should any teachers decide against membership, you will need to contact me at Goff to discuss agency fee procedures.
If you have any questions regarding membership, please feel free to contact me at Goff Middle School at 477-7434 or by e-mail at hoffmanmi@egscd.org . If, during the summer, you had changes in your name, address, phone number, building and/or building assignment, etc., please notify me as soon as possible. If any changes occur during the school year in your name, address, phone number, building and/or building assignment, etc., please notify me immediately. I ask this of you to ensure your receipt of NYSUT and AFT publications and benefit information as well as inter-school mailings. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Michelle Hoffman

Don't Be Affraid
A Message From The Grievance Chair Don't Be Afraid! As always, this year I have heard of situations where an INU member has encountered difficulties and has not reached out to the EGTA for help. This, my friends, is, quite frankly, a silly course of action. We're here for you. And we're certainly not going to make things worse by charging into an administrator's office screaming and yelling. Those days are gone. The EGTA relies on discreet and cordial negotiations with the district's representatives to achieve its goals. You would be surprised at the strong professional relationships we have forged with "The Dark Side". The existence of these connections directly benefit the INU. Yes, sometimes we do yell and get mad, but never at the expense of the individual INU member. And often, we help the situation get resolved favorably for the teacher involved. So pick up that phone, send that e-mail, or start that texting (although Peter doesn't understand text messaging). We're the EGTA, and we're here to help! Send your hate-mail to crallse@egcsd.org or call me at 423-3909

Q & A Fund-raising Activites
Below is a link to the New York State Education Department’s Counsel Office. It’s mission is to provide the Regents, the Commissioner and the NY Education Department with legal counsel and services that enable them to establish education policy and comply with the law.
As teachers, we often find ourselves raising money for an activity, club or team sport. Follow the link to their Questions & Answers page on solicitation of charitable donations from school children.
